Funeral Planning

As Catholics, we believe that death is not the end, but the passage into eternal life with Christ. A Catholic funeral gives family and friends the opportunity to pray for the person who has died, comfort one another, and place our hope in the promise of the Resurrection.

I Need to Plan a Funeral Now

If your loved one has died, please contact the funeral home of your choice first. The funeral director will work with our pastor and parish office to coordinate the date, time, and basic arrangements for the funeral liturgy. Families are also welcome to call the parish office directly with questions or for pastoral support.

Funerals may be celebrated at any of our three parish churches, depending on availability, pastoral needs, and family preference.

·         Immaculate Conception: 1305 Humboldt Avenue

I Want to Understand the Catholic Funeral Rites

The Catholic funeral rites usually include three moments of prayer: the Vigil, the Funeral Mass or funeral liturgy, and the Rite of Committal at the cemetery. These rites help the Church pray for the person who has died, comfort those who mourn, and proclaim our hope in Christ’s Resurrection.

I Want to Help Plan the Funeral Liturgy

A member of the parish staff will help the family prepare the funeral liturgy. Together, we will discuss Scripture readings, sacred music, family participation, the placement of the funeral pall, gift bearers, prayers of the faithful, and any brief words of remembrance that may be appropriate.

I Want to Choose Music, Readings, or Family Roles

Funeral music should be sacred and appropriate for Catholic worship. Families may share favorite hymns or Scripture passages with the parish staff, who will help ensure that all selections fit the prayer of the Church. Family members or friends may also be invited to serve as readers, gift bearers, or participants in placing the funeral pall.

I Want to Plan Ahead

Planning ahead can be a gift to your family. You may wish to record your church preference, Scripture readings, favorite hymns, cemetery information, funeral home preference, and names of family members or friends who should be contacted. These plans should be shared with your family, funeral home, and parish office so they are available when needed.

Helpful Checklist

·         Contact the funeral home of your choice.

·         Ask the funeral home to contact the Sheboygan South Catholic Parishes office.

·         Choose the preferred church, if possible: Immaculate Conception, St. Peter Claver, or Ss. Cyril and Methodius.

·         Meet with parish staff to plan the funeral liturgy.

·         Select Scripture readings and family readers.

·         Share sacred music preferences.

·         Choose gift bearers, pall placement participants, and other family roles, if desired.

·         Discuss any brief words of remembrance with parish staff.

 ·         Confirm cemetery and committal arrangements.
